How do I wear perfume?
Most people use perfume to attract attention in positive ways, but it can often have the opposite effect. The perfect perfume should make the space around you comfortable. A strong scent may keep people away. Here are some simple tips to help you choose a perfume that won’t irritate people around you.

Your body has its own natural scent. So try to find a fragrance that compliments it. You should look for a perfume that is a little subtle so as not to dominate a room but scented enough to get people to be around you. The perfume should enhance all of your positive properties.
A great way to see how certain perfumes smell on your skin is to visit the fragrance counter at your local department store. When trying different perfumes, spray each on a separate part of your body, away from the other. Try to limit yourself to a few fragrances each time you visit and step away from the perfume department for a few moments so that you don’t confuse other fragrances with your skin.
Make sure you apply the perfume directly to your skin instead of clothing. That way, you can see how well the scent mixes with your natural scent as well as with the soaps and makeup you use regularly.
Even if you think you have found the perfect perfume, do not rush to buy it. Spray a sample of the fragrance you like and try wearing it for a full day. This will help you determine if the odour is disappearing quickly or has caused a headache or other allergic reaction. A full day is usually enough to make sure none of this happens.

Do’s of wearing a perfume
Simple steps in applying perfume:

  • The best time to apply your perfume is after you have a bath or shower. This is when your skin is cleanest and most likely to fully absorb the scent.
  • Make sure you don’t overdo it. Remember that your scent should attract people, not let them run the other way. A little can go a long way. So whenever you use a touch of perfume, dab something on your fingertips and gently dab it on your pulse areas. They are located on the wrists, on the cleavage, on the chest, behind the earlobes, in the elbow area and behind the inner thighs and knees. All of these areas are perfect because this is where the blood flows close to the surface of the skin and the scent can diffuse quickly. If your perfume is in a spray bottle, you should still apply it to the same heart rate areas. Be sure to spray the perfume off a foot or so, however, for fairly even distribution. Another tactic is to spray the perfume in the air a few times before “going” through the scented cloud that it creates. As the heat builds up, it’s best to apply your favourite perfume from the bottom up. You will find that the scent lasts much longer during the day.
  • It is common knowledge that people with dry skin cannot retain scent as long as people with oily skin. This is because the fragrance oils bind to the natural oils in the skin and slow down the evaporation process. If you have dry skin, it might be a good idea to apply your perfume a few times a day or invest in a good moisturizer that you can apply before your perfume.

Dont’s of wearing a perfume

  • Apply your perfume before putting on your clothes or jewellery. There are some fragrances that stain and damage clothing, pearls, and precious metals. The idea is to perfume your body, not the clothes you are wearing.
  • A common mistake when applying perfume is rubbing your wrists. This can drastically change the scent of the perfume. We already mentioned pulse points, but that doesn’t mean you have to perfume them all at once. Madame Coco’s general rule is that you should only apply perfume where you want to be kissed. This is good advice from an expert, as is following the 3-spray Eau de parfum or 5-spray eau de toilette rule.
  • Avoid spraying perfume on your hair as it can react badly to certain hair products and create overwhelming odours.
  • Don’t make the mistake of reapplying your fragrance if you can’t smell it. The most common reason is that you have gotten used to the smell. One way to avoid this is to wear different fragrances from time to time instead of just going for one.

If you take the time to stick to what is due and what is not, it is unlikely that you will ever come across a situation where anyone is offended by your smell. So spray and enjoy.
